The InCommon Community

One key benefit of InCommon participation is access to a community that can provide support and logistical help as you become more involved in federating and single sign-on convenience. Here are some of the community benefits.

Webs and Wikis

InCommon and the Shibboleth development team both have comprehensive websites and wikis for information and support (see the list/URLs under “Related Resources” to the right).

Working Groups

InCommon assists working groups, providing wiki space, email lists and conference call resources for group meetings. InCommon also provides logistical help in setting up side meetings at Internet2 Member Meetings and can help facilitate face-to-face meetings of the group, when necessary. For more information, email InCommon-admin@incommonfederation.org.

Case Studies

InCommon provides a number of case studies – with plans to continue building that library – to help participants get top value for their membership. These case studies demonstrate the benefits of federating and provide examples you can use with key stakeholders. Current case studies include:

  • How a consortium of Virginia colleges and universities are federating to share more than 500 hours of PBS video content.
  • How the University of California system has built a system-wide federation on top of InCommon.
  • How a university leverages its existing identity management system through InCommon to comprehensive career services and class management and homework resources
  • How WebAssign, a Service Provider, used the federation to stop managing student data and class roster information and focus, instead, on its homework delivery system and other applications.
