Technical Requirements - Identity Provider
(If you are attending the Service Provider workshop, be sure to see those technical requirements. below the IdP requirements)
To get the most out of the Identity Provider workshop, participants should have the following knowledge:
- Basic understanding of XML, specifically how to correctly nest elements and properly close tags.
- Knowledge of your favorite XML Editor, like vim or emacs.
- Basic understating of LDAP, specifically your LDAP, its structure,
- Basic understanding of authentication, how it works at your campus, and familiarity with single sign-on concepts.
Participants will be installing Shibboleth in a virtual machine (VM) environment on their own machines. To accommodate the requirements of the VM, attendees must bring a laptop with the following Linux or Windows configuration. (Please choose the OS on which you’d like to install Shibboleth Identity Provider.)
Linux (CentOS)
Hardware
- PC or Mac
- Pentium 4 or later processor
- 1 GB of memory
- 15 GB of free hard drive space
- DVD drive
- 15' Ethernet drop cables to connect to the network
Software
- VMWare Player/Workstation/Fusion software is a free download for Windows and Linux desktops. You can obtain a free key by enabling a 30-day trial period.
- Please test before arriving. NOTE: VMWare Server Products will not work. Please ensure you have the download noted above.
- Download the training VM

Technical Requirements – Service Provider

- Basic understating of the Apache or IIS web server, depending on your chosen OS.
- Basic familiarity with single sign-on concepts.
